Hybrid Inverters

Hybrid inverters run grid-tied solar and battery backup from one unit. Pick by battery voltage: 48V (Sol-Ark 12K-2P, Sol-Ark Limitless 15K-2P, Sol-Ark 18K, Solis S6 16kW) or high-voltage (GoodWe ES-US 11.4kW), then check the inverter maker's approved battery list.

What is a hybrid inverter?

A hybrid inverter is a grid-tie inverter with battery and backup capability. It sells excess solar to the utility when the grid is up, and can power loads from batteries and solar when the grid fails. A pure grid-tie inverter has no battery backup, and a classic off-grid inverter/charger has no utility sell-back. More on our inverter basics page.

Hybrid, off-grid, micro or grid-tie?

  • Hybrid (this page): grid connection, battery charging and backup transfer in one platform.
  • Off-grid inverters: battery-based systems with little or no sell-back, common for cabins and remote sites.
  • Microinverters: panel-level AC; backup needs separate storage hardware.
  • Grid-tie inverters: export solar to the grid without battery backup.

FAQ

Do I still need a separate charge controller with a hybrid?

Often no. Many hybrids include built-in MPPT solar charge control. You may still add a separate controller for an extra array, DC coupling, or a generator or AC-coupled path.

What battery voltage do these hybrids use?

The Sol-Ark 12K-2P, Sol-Ark Limitless 15K-2P and Solis S6 16kW are listed as 48V hybrids, and the Sol-Ark 18K product page lists a 48V nominal battery. The GoodWe ES-US 11.4kW is a high-voltage hybrid. Before you choose a bank, check the inverter manufacturer's approved battery list for your exact model. For the GoodWe ES-US, the GoodWe ES-US 11.4kW product page summarizes GoodWe's approved list.

Which hybrid is best for DIY battery backup?

There is no one-size answer. Start with your grid service (most listed models are 120/240V or 240V split-phase), your battery voltage (48V or high-voltage), and the loads you want to back up. Then match array voltage, pass-through and battery current on the product page. If you want a second opinion, book 1 hour of expert solar technical support.

Can a hybrid run with a generator?

Many hybrids support a generator on a smart or AC input for battery charging during long outages. Confirm the exact port and transfer behavior for your model before ordering transfer equipment.

More Info on Hybrid Inverters

With a hybrid power system, backup power for your house comes from deep cycle batteries. When the grid is up, the inverter keeps the batteries charged; when it goes down, the batteries carry your backed-up loads. Some hybrid inverter/chargers have two AC inputs, one from the grid and one from a generator, so a generator can recharge the batteries as needed instead of running constantly while the grid is out.
