Product Overview
The Briggs & Stratton SimpliPHI 6.6 is a 48-volt lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery module that stores 6.65 kWh of energy (6,656 Wh). It is the building block of the SimpliPHI 6.6 battery system. You stack one, two or three modules on top of each other. A SimpliPHI 6.6 controller goes on top, and a floor or wall base goes underneath. A full stack of three holds 19.95 kWh.
The modules connect to each other through built-in RapidStak connectors that carry power and communication, so there are no cables between modules in a stack. Briggs & Stratton says a stack of three can be assembled in under 5 minutes. The battery stores DC power. It connects to a 48 V battery inverter or hybrid inverter, which turns that power into AC power for your home. The inverter also recharges the battery from solar, the grid or a generator.
Briggs & Stratton lists the battery for backup power, time-of-use savings, solar-plus-storage and off-grid power. A full system can grow to six stacks (18 modules, about 119.7 kWh).
Best For
- Home backup: Store energy for use during utility outages as part of a properly designed backup system with a 48 V inverter.
- Solar-plus-storage homes: Store daytime solar production for use in the evening and at night.
- Time-of-use rate plans: Use stored energy when electricity costs the most. Briggs & Stratton lists time-of-use savings as an application.
- Off-grid homes: Briggs & Stratton lists off-grid power as an application. Size the battery bank and inverter for your loads.
- Garage, utility room or outdoor installs: A complete stack is rated IP65, so it can go outdoors without a separate cabinet. Install only in the locations the manual allows (see Important Considerations).

What You May Also Need
Usually required
- SimpliPHI 6.6 Battery Controller: Briggs & Stratton requires one controller on top of each stack. It holds the stack's power terminals and communication ports.
- Base for each stack: Each stack needs a Briggs & Stratton floor base or wall base underneath. The SimpliPHI Floor Mount for 6.6 is for floor installs in non-seismic zones only.
- Low-voltage (48 V-class) battery inverter or hybrid inverter: Turns the battery's DC power into AC power and charges the battery. See the inverter communication row in the table, and check Briggs & Stratton's integration guides for your inverter model.
- Battery cables: The manual lists red and black 4/0 AWG cables (sized to code) and 3/8 in closed-end power lugs as required parts that are not included. AltE carries red and black 4/0 AWG cables with 3/8 in lugs; check that the lug style and length suit your install.
May be required
- Battery disconnect: The manual says a disconnect is needed between the stack and the charging equipment unless that equipment has a built-in battery disconnect. Size it to the device with the lower current rating.
- More SimpliPHI 6.6 modules: Add up to three per stack and up to 18 per system. Each new stack needs its own controller and base.
- Overcurrent protection for each stack: With two or more stacks in parallel, Briggs & Stratton's manual requires a DC overcurrent protection device between each stack and the combining busbar. Single-pole is required and double-pole is recommended. Size it to the NEC and your local code office's rules.
Optional upgrades
- EnergyTrak monitoring: Briggs & Stratton's EnergyTrak gateway and app show battery status, fault alerts and over-the-air updates. The manual describes connecting the 6.6 controller to an EnergyTrak gateway.
Check current manufacturer documentation before combining components, especially batteries, inverters, communications equipment and system-control hardware.
Important Considerations
- Not a complete system by itself. Every stack needs a SimpliPHI 6.6 controller on top and a floor or wall base underneath, both sold separately.
- Parallel only. The system runs at 56.8 VDC or less. Never connect modules or stacks in series. Parallel stacks each need their own DC overcurrent protection device and cables of identical length and gauge, per the manual. Do not go over 6 controllers or 18 modules per system; Briggs & Stratton says doing so may damage the batteries and voids the warranty.
- Where it can go. The manual allows these locations: attached garages separated from living space; detached garages and accessory buildings; outdoors on exterior walls or the ground, at least 3 ft from doors and windows into the home; and utility closets or storage spaces where your local code office (AHJ) approves. It is not for living spaces.
- Capacity limits per location. Under NFPA 855, the manual lists a maximum of 40 kWh in utility closets, basements and storage spaces, and 80 kWh in garages, accessory buildings and outdoors. Stacks must be at least 3 ft apart.
- Keep away from salt air. Install more than half a mile from the ocean and out of saltwater spray. Damage from salt exposure isn't covered by the warranty.
- Cold weather. The battery won't charge below 14°F (−10°C). Briggs & Stratton recommends keeping it between 32°F and 104°F (0°C to 40°C) for best performance.
- Install upright and secure. Mount it vertically with less than 1° of tilt, on a non-flammable surface, following the NEC, NFPA 855 and local codes. A stack weighs between 150 and 435 lb.
