Black 4/0 AWG battery cable with heatshrink and lug — an example of wiring that belongs on an off-grid solar parts checklist

Off-Grid Solar Parts Checklist: What Else You Need

Start with the loads and the system architecture, then build a parts list that covers generation, charge control, storage, conversion, mounting, wiring, protection, and monitoring. Check each product’s packing list. Panels, an inverter, and batteries do not by themselves prove that the cables, mounts, disconnects, or monitoring hardware your site needs are included.

Define the loads and architecture

Before shopping for accessories, write down:

  1. What you need to power (continuous watts and surge watts for each load, and how many hours per day).
  2. Where the system will run (cabin, shop, backup island, RV—each changes mounting, cable length, and enclosure needs).
  3. How energy will be stored and converted (battery voltage class, inverter type, and whether solar charging is built into the inverter or needs a separate charge controller).

This article does not replace a reviewed electrical design. It helps you notice missing parts before you place an order.

Build the bill of materials

Major equipment

Category What to record Notes
Solar modules Exact model/revision, quantity, Voc/Vmp/Isc/Imp from the datasheet Wattage alone is not enough for string or controller/inverter matching
Charge control Separate MPPT/PWM or inverter-integrated PV inputs Confirm whether a standalone controller is actually required
Battery storage Chemistry, nominal/usable energy, voltage, quantity Keep energy (kWh) separate from power (kW)
Inverter / charger Continuous and surge output, battery voltage, PV input limits if integrated Off-grid and hybrid/grid-interactive architectures are not interchangeable
Monitoring BMS app, inverter display, or external monitor Only list hardware supported by the chosen battery/inverter manuals

Browse category pages when you are ready to compare current listings (availability changes):

Charge controllers: Many off-grid inverters include a built-in PV charge controller, and some systems need a separate one. Check your inverter's documentation and note whether the PV charge function you need is already included before you add a separate controller to your list. For MPPT vs PWM concepts, see Comparing PWM and MPPT charge controllers.

Wiring, mounting, and protection

Category Typical items to list Destinations to review
PV wiring & connectors Module interconnects, extension leads, branch connectors matched to the documented connector family Cable & wiring
Battery cabling Gauge, length, lug size, insulation rating per equipment manuals Cable & wiring (same)
Mounting Rails, clamps, roof/ground attachments, grounding hardware for the chosen racking family Solar panel mounts
Combiner / overcurrent Combiner, fuses/breakers sized from the reviewed design Combiner boxes, Disconnects & breakers
Disconnects DC and/or AC disconnects as required by the design and local rules Disconnects & breakers
Enclosures & labels Only as required by the equipment manuals and installation plan Confirm the part role against current stocked electrical/safety listings—do not assume a legacy URL still leads where you expect

Before ordering PV leads or adapters, read Connector Compatibility – is cross-mating UL approved?.

Separate included from separately required items

For every major SKU on your list:

  1. Open the current packing list / datasheet / installation manual for that exact model.
  2. Mark each accessory as Included, Sold separately, or Unknown based on that document—not from memory or a store title.
  3. Do not assume a “kit,” pallet, or inverter carton includes mounts, battery cables, or disconnects.

Example of how to check (not a system design, and not a packing-list claim for these SKUs):

  • Use a module listing such as the SunPro 440W module page as a reminder to open that model’s datasheet/packing list before marking mounts or cables as included.
  • Use the off-grid solar inverters category the same way for inverter accessories.
  • If evaluating RUiXU Lithi2-16 storage, treat pairing, communications, and cabling as conditions that must come from current RUiXU documentation for the exact SUNON model under review. AltEStore merchandising shows Lithi2-16 with RUiXU SUNON inverters; do not infer fit with other inverter brands from this checklist.

Resolve unknown parts before ordering

Before you check out or request a quote, confirm:

  • Every row has an exact model or a clear “to be sourced” note
  • Included vs separate is marked from the packing list or datasheet, not from memory
  • Connector manufacturer/family is identified for every PV mating point
  • Battery cable gauge/length/lugs match the inverter and battery manuals
  • Mounting family matches module frame and site type
  • Any “unknown” row has an owner (you, installer, or written quote)

When commercial details are still open (freight, substitutions, unavailable SKUs), submit a defined list through Request a quote. For order or account help, use Help & contact. Paid design help is available as 1 hour of expert solar technical support when that service fits the question.
