Product Overview
IronRidge QuickMount Halo UltraGrip, or HUG (QM-HUG-01-B1), is a roof attachment that seals on top of composition shingles. You don't pry up shingles or slide flashing under a course. This listing is the black finish.
A cast-aluminum Halo surrounds the UltraGrip, a foam-backed mastic seal that IronRidge says adheres to the shingle surface and fills step-downs up to 1/8" high. HUG is fastened with IronRidge RD Structural Screws, sold separately.
HUG can be fastened to the rafters with two screws or to the roof deck with six. IronRidge says HUG is only approved for installation with IronRidge RD Structural Screws.
Best For
- Composition shingle roofs with bonded courses: IronRidge says HUG mounts without prying shingles, without pilot holes, and with no sealant in most cases.
- Roofs where rafters are hard to hit: IronRidge allows a deck-attached installation with six RD Structural Screws when the rafter is missed.
- Low-slope rolled roofing or modified bitumen: HUG's UL 2703A ratings include roll roofing at 1:12 and up and mod-bit at 1/4:12 and up (see the table).
- Black racking: Choose this finish to match black rails and clamps.

What You May Also Need
Usually required
- IronRidge RD Structural Screws (HW-RD1430-01-M1): Sold separately. Plan on 2 per attachment into a rafter, up to 3 if a screw misses, or 6 per deck-attached HUG.
- IronRidge XR rails and bonding hardware: IronRidge says the rail can be installed on either side of HUG.
- Module clamps and grounding: Choose them from IronRidge's XR Flush Mount manual. See roof mounts.
May be required
- Approved roofing sealant: Needed only to fill keyways or butt joints you cannot avoid, or to cover stripped screw heads. IronRidge's HUG manual lists compatible and incompatible sealants.
- Expansion joints: IronRidge requires a thermal expansion joint on rows of rail over 60 feet when using HUG.
- Tools: IronRidge lists a tape measure, chalk line, marking tool, hand brush, cordless drill or impact driver, and a 5/16" hex socket.
Optional upgrades
- The other HUG finish: Mill HUG, if part of the array needs to match differently.
Check current manufacturer documentation before combining components, especially batteries, inverters, communications equipment and system-control hardware.
Important Considerations
- Never put sealant under HUG. IronRidge says not to apply sealant to the bottom surface of HUG. Remove the release liner, then press it into place with minimal force.
- Check positions first. IronRidge warns that HUG is difficult to relocate once pressed onto the roof. Don't straddle two shingle courses, and avoid keyways and butt joints.
- Do not remove missed screws. IronRidge says screws that miss the rafter stay in place. If more than three miss, switch to the deck-attached method and reduce attachment spacing as engineering requires.
- Finish warranty. IronRidge warrants finishes against visible defects, peeling and cracking for 5 years from shipment, subject to the exclusions in its limited warranty document.
- Engineering and permits. Attachment spacing, rafter or deck requirements and load capacity are project-specific. Use IronRidge's design tools and stamped certification letters, and install under local building codes.
