Product Overview
The Tesla Backup Switch (model 1624171-xx-y; this listing is part 1624171-00-X) controls a Powerwall system's connection to the grid. Tesla says it installs behind the utility meter or in a standalone meter panel downstream of the utility meter, and it fits ANSI Type 2S meter sockets, ring or ringless.
Tesla says it detects grid outages automatically and switches the home to backup power. It communicates directly with Powerwall over CAN, and its built-in meter lets the Tesla app show home energy use.
Tesla lists it for Powerwall systems only: Powerwall 3, Powerwall+, and Powerwall 2 with Backup Gateway 2. It is not a general-purpose transfer switch for other battery brands.
Best For
- Tesla Powerwall whole-home backup: Tesla lists compatibility with Powerwall 3, Powerwall+ and Powerwall 2 with Backup Gateway 2.
- 120/240 V split-phase homes with a Type 2S meter socket: Rated 200 A continuous load.

What You May Also Need
Usually required
- A compatible Tesla Powerwall system: Powerwall 3, Powerwall+, or Powerwall 2 with Backup Gateway 2, per Tesla.
- Utility approval: The switch installs at or behind the utility meter, so the utility must allow it.
May be required
- An upstream breaker with an adequate short-circuit rating: Tesla's 22 kA rating applies with a breaker rated for the available fault current.
- A standalone meter panel: If the switch is installed downstream of the utility meter rather than behind it.
Optional upgrades
- 1/2 in NPT conduit fittings: For the switch's conduit connection.
Check current manufacturer documentation before combining components, especially batteries, inverters, communications equipment and system-control hardware.
Important Considerations
- Powerwall systems only. Tesla lists compatibility with Powerwall 3, Powerwall+ and Powerwall 2 with Backup Gateway 2. Do not plan to use it with other brands' batteries or inverters.
- 200 A split-phase, Type 2S. Check that your meter socket is ANSI Type 2S and that the service is 120/240 V split-phase at 200 A or less.
- Utility rules. Some utilities do not allow meter-socket devices or require their own approval and inspection.
- Professional installation. Installation at the meter requires utility coordination and a qualified installer.
