Product Overview

The S-5! Protea Bracket attaches solar to exposed-fastened, trapezoidal-rib metal roofs. S-5! says it fits most trapezoidal sheet profiles, including insulated metal panels, with top rib widths up to 3" (76 mm).

An adjustable hinge base fits varying rib widths, heights and angles. It mounts on the crown of the rib and fastens into the sheeting only. A factory-applied EPDM pad seals the feet, and S-5! says not to use additional sealant.

The integrated L-foot stands vertical for side-mounted rails, or turns horizontal for bottom-mounted rails or the S-5! PVKIT. The bracket comes pre-assembled.

Best For

  • Trapezoidal-rib metal roofs, including insulated metal panels: Rib top widths up to 3", per S-5!.
  • Rail-mounted solar on IronRidge XR Flush Mount: IronRidge's XR Flush Mount Installation Manual (Version 5.2) lists the ProteaBracket among the third-party roof attachments tested or evaluated with the XR Flush Mount system. IronRidge says to follow S-5!'s instructions for installation.
  • Rail-less solar with S-5! PVKIT: S-5! says an extra M8 nut, purchased separately, is needed for the PVKIT setup.

What You May Also Need

Usually required

  • Rails and rail hardware, or S-5! PVKIT: Attach them to the integrated L-foot. See metal roof mounts.
  • A 5/16" drive socket and a 1/2" open-end or socket wrench: S-5! lists these with a screw gun, string line and rag.

May be required

  • An extra M8 nut: Needed when mounting S-5! PVKIT, per S-5!.
  • Bulb-Tite rivets: S-5! says to replace a stripped screw with a waterproof bulb rivet.

Optional upgrades

  • A string line: S-5! recommends one to align brackets across the roof.

Check current manufacturer documentation before combining components, especially batteries, inverters, communications equipment and system-control hardware.

Important Considerations

  • Do not add a second L-foot. S-5! says not to attach an additional L-foot to the Protea Bracket's integrated L-foot; the added height makes the assembly unstable.
  • Keep each row consistent. The bracket is reversible, so S-5! says all brackets in a row should have the L-foot in the same orientation.
  • Avoid lapped ribs. S-5! says installing on a lapped rib of a trapezoidal panel is not generally recommended because of variations in lapped ribs and sealant placement. Contact S-5! if your design requires it.
  • Snow country. S-5! advises caution for rail-mounted PV installations in snow country. Check S-5!'s load tables for limits.
  • Engineering is your responsibility. S-5! says the user or installer is responsible for all engineering and design, including spacing. S-5! publishes load test results on its website for load-critical designs.
