KiloVault Uniti Pro Benefits: The Value Stack

three

What is the energy storage system value stack?

With energy storage systems value stacking is the name of the game. What we mean by this is that you can get more than one benefit from your system. By stacking value, you way more than if you just thought about one aspect of a system.

In the past we may have just thought about one dimension of value - the savings we get from solar panels, or the ability to have power off grid or when then the power goes out. With value stacking, we find all the possible ways to create value with our energy system.

There are a lot of layers to the value stack, but for home and business owners this often boils down to three key elements: backup power, utility programs and rates, and government incentives. Let’s look into these in more detail now.

Back-up Power

backup

What you need to know: You can have power when the utility power goes out, while saving money, getting tax credits and making the responsible choice.

When most people think of home batteries, they think of backup power for when the lights go out, the TV and computer shut off and the refrigerator starts getting warm. Candles come out, the kids get restless, and the anxiety sets in: "how long is this going to be?"

Most homeowners install a home energy storage battery to ensure they have backup power in case of an emergency or planned grid outage. These batteries are designed to store electricity generated from renewable energy resources or other places, like the grid or a generator, and can be used as a backup source of power when the utility grid shuts down.

One of the best options for resiliency and savings is a solar panel with battery back-up system. Solar panels can generate electricity during the day, and the battery back-up system stores the energy for use at night or during power outages.

Time of Use

time

What you need to know: You can save money with Uniti Pro if you have ‘time to use’ electricity rates.

KiloVault Uniti Pro can play a crucial role in helping residential customers manage their energy usage and take advantage of time of use rates.Time of Use (TOU) is a type of electricity rate structure that charges different rates for electricity depending on the time of day it is used. This type of rate structure can be beneficial for homeowners with solar power and energy storage systems, as they can take advantage of lower rates during off-peak hours to charge their home battery.

The main benefit of TOU is that it encourages customers to shift their electricity usage to off-peak hours. However, peak hours are when we want to use power the most! With a home battery, you can enjoy low cost power whenever its needed.

Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity pricing is a type of rate structure that charges customers different prices for electricity depending on the time of day they use it. Not all homes have this type of rate structure so its important to look closely at your electric bill to see if this type of savings applies to you.

Time of day, time of use and peak times refer to specific periods throughout the day when electricity demand is highest and energy costs are typically higher. By utilizing energy storage systems, residential customers can store excess energy during off-peak hours, which are typically during the night or early morning when electricity demand is lower. This stored energy can then be used during peak times, such as during the summer months or specific time periods when energy costs are at their highest. This allows customers to avoid higher energy costs during peak times and instead rely on the stored energy from their energy storage systems.

Additionally, energy storage systems can support the charging of electric vehicles or power other high-demand appliances like washing machines during off-peak periods, further optimizing energy usage and reducing costs. By providing flexibility in energy consumption, Uniti Pro contributes to a more efficient electric grid, lower energy costs, and provide customers with a range of rate plans and options to suit their specific needs.

Demand Response

demand

What you need to know: Use solar and storage to reduce energy usage from the utility company and save money on your bill.

Demand response is a program that allows homeowners to reduce their electricity usage during peak demand times in order to help the local power grid. This can be done by using home batteries, such as those made by KiloVault, to store energy during off-peak hours and then use it during peak hours.

By doing this, homeowners can save money on their electricity bills while also helping the environment by reducing their carbon footprint. Not all utilities offer demand response programs for homeowners, however one of the best residential demand response programs in the country is the ConnectedSolutions incentive in the Northeast.

Energy storage demand response programs play a crucial role in managing electricity usage and addressing the ever-increasing demand for electricity. These programs aim to optimize energy consumption by incentivizing consumers to reduce their electricity demand during peak demand periods.

By implementing these programs, power plants can mitigate strain on the electric grid, maintain grid reliability, and avoid the need for additional power generation capacity. Price signals and wholesale prices are used to encourage consumers to shift their energy usage away from peak times, thereby reducing strain on the grid and minimizing the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades.

By incorporating energy storage technologies into demand response programs, excess electricity can be stored during off-peak periods and utilized during peak demand, further enhancing grid stability and efficiency. Ultimately, these programs offer a sustainable solution to the growing demand for electricity while ensuring the reliability and affordability of the electric grid.

Solar Self-Supply

solar

What you need to know: solar energy is more valuable when it's at your home and with energy storage systems, you can get the most value from your solar panels.

Solar panels can generate a lot of electricity- but they do so in the middle of the day, when you’re at work, the store or the game. If your not home using electricity when the sun is shining you could be losing out on the maximum value of your solar investment, depending on what your utility has to say about it.

In the past, many utilities would give you a one to one credit- so for every unit of solar energy generated and exported to the grid, you would get one credit you could consume later. This type of program is called net metering, and specifically at a one to one rate.

Utilities have been pushing back, trying to get the value of net metering reduced. Now, in many places you only get half or a quarter credit - in some cases zero credit or export is allowed! You might be giving up your solar power for pennies on the dollar or worse. So the trick is to save that solar power in your batteries. This is called solar self-supply.

Take back what’s yours! Don’t give away your solar power. Install KiloVault Uniti Pro and keep your solar power at home, where it belongs.

Off Grid Systems

off grid

In many locations it's cost prohibitive, or downright impossible, to connect to the electricity grid. In these situations customers turn to storage systems to provide power. Most pair their batteries with wind or solar renewable energy resources, but others choose to use a gas generator to charge up. Using batteries paired with a generator allows for quiet operation and piece for hours as well as reduced fuel consumption. Add in some solar panels and you may never need to fire up the generator again.

Power Up!

What is power backup?

Power backup is having a means of delivering energy and power to your loads, like phone, WiFi, lights and refrigerator, when you need it most.

How much backup power do I need?

You want to have enough backup power that all your devices work for as long as you want them to. But often budget, space or other factors are the limits before our needs. This is because we use a lot of energy! Reducing energy usage during backup events, or high cost of energy times, will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

So think about what you really need- can the pool or hot tub turn off during a prolonged power outage? Most likely yes. Do you want to focus mostly on things like phone, internet, laptops, and other means of communication? Do you want to make sure your food doesn’t spoil and your drinks stay ice cold? Do you want to make sure you don’t miss the big game? These things are all achievable with the right sized battery backup system.

Sizing the right size battery backup system will take some thought. No matter who you talk to, no one knows your needs better than you. The first step is to look at your power bill. How many kilowatt hours per month are you using? Let’s say it’s 900. That’s about 30 kWh per day, the size of the Uniti Six. If you want power for one day, that unit should do fine. If you want two or more days of power, you have a few options. Get more Uniti systems for more days of power, or get a generation source like solar panels, or reduce your power consumption, either by turning things off, or using a device like a smart load panel.

Battery backup is as much an art as it is a science. We get so used to just plugging stuff into the wall and not thinking about it, but once the grid is gone, or the prices have skyrocketed for electricity, it becomes imperative to think about energy use. Battery systems, solar and smart electronics are amazing inventions that many of us live with all the time, but at the end of the day, it comes down to you to make sure you have enough power for when you need it and that when you need it, you use it wisely. There is no getting around this- energy comes into the system, energy comes out of the system, it's your choice of the rate of each, provided you have the systems necessary to support it.

Can you plug a power strip into a battery backup?

Yes you can. Uniti is designed to be interconnected directly in your home power system, your electrical main panel, but we thought ahead and installed 30 amp outlets inside the Uniti, because it's what we would want in our homes- simplicity. So yes, go ahead and plug right in!

How to build a backup power supply?

Building a backup power supply for your home of business is easy with the right tools. KiloVault Uniti Pro is the simplest way to build your backup power system. Simply select which configuration works best for you, add in some optional solar panels, and bam - two parts give you nearly everything you need for a solar backup energy storage system.

When Uniti Pro arrives, install the solar panels, plug in the battery packs, and start using power. You may need or want a professional electrician, or other skilled pro to help, especially if you are planning to connect to the utility grid. It might even be required, depending on where you live. But Uniti Pro makes it simple. It was designed by solar pro's to make it easy for anyone to jump into home energy generation and storage.

How to connect backup battery to power supply?

Whenever you're working with electricity it's extremely important to pay attention to safety instructions and warnings.  The Uniti Pro has tons of certifications and listings and was designed with National Electric Code in mind. However, the installer still needs to make sure that the project is installed correctly. Read all documentation provided and work with a pro whenever needed.

Uniti Pro has built in 30amp outlets, so connecting to a power supply is as simple as plugging in your phone. To unlock Uniti's full potential, it will need to be wired into a AC electrical distribution panel and this is often a step that requires a pro.

How to make a battery backup power supply?

To make a battery backup power supply, you either need to find all the parts and components, learn how to put them all together, and hope it works, or you can get a pre-wired, pre-configured kit, like the Uniti Pro.

Where can I learn more about energy storage system value stacking?

There are many layers to the value stack, and a lot of them don’t really apply to homes and businesses, but if you want to read more about value stacking, the Rocky Mountain Institute is a good resource.

Final Thoughts:

It is recommended that you add additional battery packs within the first year. After one year, it's recommended that you expand your Uniti Pro system with additional Uniti Pro systems via AC parallel stacking. Up to 12 Uniti Pro systems can be stacked in parallel under specific conditions. Default configuration is 6 Uniti Pro systems allowed in parallel.
