AltE, formerly the Alternative Energy Store, is excited to announce the long
anticipated power up of their first solar electric system, roof mounted on the
Hudson Mill Business Center, in which the headquarters is housed. A leading
renewable energy online retailer and alternative energy educator, AltE considers
this the next step towards a more sustainable workplace and a top notch hands
on educational facility.
"We are very excited to announce this go live, not only because we've wanted to have a working renewable energy system in our headquarters for a long time and have worked tirelessly with the Hudson Mill Business Center to make it possible, but also because we feel that this is really the next step towards solidifying our reputation as an excellent hand on educational provider for DIY homeowners and installers alike," explained Sascha Deri, the CEO of AltE.
AltE has housed their headquarters in Hudson, MA in the historic Hudson Mill Business Center for three years. In fact, one of the reasons the facility was chosen by the three founders of AltE was because of the height of the building and substantial, un-shaded roof space; perfect for a solar electric system installation.
"As a retailer of solar electric systems and other renewable energy products, we had wanted to install a system for our own use for some time. After moving several times to larger office buildings to accommodate our growth, we finally found one that could support a solar panel installation." continued Deri. "Little did we know the challenges we would ultimately face in order to install the system and actually power it up!"
In 2007 AltE formally approached the Hudson Mill Business Center about the
installation of the system. The goal initially was only to have a small working
solar panel array
(three panels in total) feeding power into the building. The system, which can
produce about 60 kilowatt hours per month, was held up because of legal liability.
Because this is only the second solar electric system installed in the small
town of Hudson, MA, there were negotiations between AltE, the Hudson Mill Business
Center and Hudson Power and Light to work through before the system could be
taken online.
"Ultimately, we feel like we've done the right thing for our company and for our community by working through this process. Now that there is a path, other small businesses and residential customers will have an easier time moving forward with solar electric systems in this area. Even though our system can only say, offset the power consumption of two of our employee's computers and phones, housing a system, working through the process of installing it and being able to use it in classes going forward makes it well worth the expense and time," said Deri.
2009 has brought the launch of AltE University's professional installation classes so having a functioning solar electric system was also a key component towards the growth of the company.
"As an alternative energy educator, we needed to offer classes on installation and we also felt like anyone visiting our facility would benefit from seeing a real system at work," explained Sascha Deri, the CEO of AltE. "To that end, we worked closely with the Hudson Mill Business Center, who was excited to participate in the process of implementing renewable energy, even though this particular system is still fairly small."
