Aspiring engineer

I am an engineering student from South Africa. Because of cheap power due to an abundance of coal set to the backdrop of  an emerging economy, there are very few instances of renewable energy where I live. This presents a problem for me, as I am eager to get involved in bringing alternative power to the developing world. Yet locally, the critical mass required to train young engineers in this sector is lacking.

As part of my degree (I am now in my third year) I am required to complete 6 weeks of "vacation work" each year. For me, this represents an opportunity to get involved in sustainable energy production. I am not concerned about making money beyond supporting myself.

If anyone reading these forums has information about such opportunities, anywhere in the world, I would be most grateful.
