thinking about the wind

I live in southern Michigan on a 200 acre farm. My electric bill says I use around 170 kwh per month. Can I produce enough energy with a windmill here to stop paying for my use? Is it worth it to spend 20 grand on a wind system to prevent paying 175 a month? Is there anyone in this state to do repairs, or even install a windmill (wind turbine?)?

Hi Lucinda,

You must have another source of power or you use very little electricity on your farm. The average home uses 600-800kWh per month. In Michigan you pay around 8 cents per kWh. Times this by your 170 kwh prediction and that would total about $14 per month.

Wind is probably not the way to go if you are upset with your hydro bill. Wind is best used when supplementing your energy usage- not eliminating it.

There are lots of other alternatives to save money depending on your particular situation.
