The moment of battery connection...

Hi folks! As a newbie, I have concerns...

I have a multiple 12V batteries (AGM 200Ah, identical model#/manufacturer, same age) that I'm going to wire up in parallel, however, they have different states of charge on them.  What should be my procedure for connecting them?

While it seems obvious, I would like to hear some opinions, just in case I've missed something.

The plan:  disconnect any charging system, discharge individual batteries to the same low voltage (something like 12.2V resting voltage) and *then* connect them in parallel.  Stored energy would be low and internal resistances should be high, to reduce the heat generated.  Wait for any heat to die down (1 Hr?) and connect the newly combined set back up to a charger.

Thoughts?

Re: The moment of battery connection...

OK, well I matched the two battery voltages to within 10 mV of each other and then wired it together.  No sparks, no heat, and now we have a happy 400Ah system.
