Solar well by Jack Miller
Date Added: January 28, 2009
I used these Kaneka panels on an offgrid solar well. They are wonderful and have given me no grief whatsoever. I got considerable more power than they proposed in the very hot climate in the mountains west of the Mojave desert. They came well packed and nicely constructed. I used them again for a small off grid cabin and was delighted with them again. I will be using them on my next project to replace a gas generator on a 2000 sf off grid house in the same community north of Las Vegas.
In short, they were just as offered and more. The size is perfect for easy installation and the quality is super. Jack Miller Electrical Services, Las Vegas, NV

These panels are just the right thing if you are charging a 48V battery bank! In that situation, the economics of these panels is just great. This is true because a) you can get by with only buying one or two panels if you're on a budget b) you can add capacity for only $300 a pop c) the wiring costs are reduced since the current is lower and d) the price per watt is very very good... almost as cheap as it gets. This is all due to the fact that the panels put out a relatively high voltage.

Another perk of these panels is that the initial output is quite a bit higher than their nominal rating. My 60W panels are producing close to 75W, or 25% more than their nominal rating. I don't know how long it will take for them to degrade to nominal, but the extra power is great no matter how long it lasts.

Excellent Value! A+A+A+A+ by Tracy Norris

These are just the ticket for getting started with Solar. Low cost and high voltage output allow for smaller wire gauges than 18v nominal systems.

With ~90voc and 48vdc nominal voltage, these panels will enable my Solectria PVI 2500 grid-tie inverter to come online with its 150vdc strike voltage with just 4 of these panels (4 x 48v = 192vdc, 240 watts). Im not sure how efficient the inverter would be with such a small 240w setup, but more panels could be added over time (in strings of 4) as the cost comes down.

Weight-per-watt may be a concern to some with larger systems since these panels weigh 31 lbs each (.516 lbs per watt) or about 516 lbs per kilowatt produced ((1000w/60w)*31 lbs). This is the weight of two grown men on your roof - probably not an issue!

In all, an excellent value. Easy to mount using Unirac Type D clamps. Highly Recommended!
