Do I need multple charge contollers?

I think that what I need is something to read about how to charge a battery bank from both a solar array and a generator. Suggestions? I just can't grasp the concept even after talking to a rep. I haven't bought anything except a generator yet.

Basic question is do I need separate voltage regulators for solar and generator? And shouldn't I have some sort of switch to select one or the other? Also when I need to use the generator, do I use the 12-volt output or the AC?

I take it your off grid. I am using 2 xantrex power panels that regulate when the generator needs to charge the batteries
and convert to 120v.
I use 2 so I can have 220v also. The pv panels are seperate and use an outback controller to charge the same batteries and
will feed them when they require it. Hope this, helps, Jim
