Simple diversion controller

Hey,

I just finished getting my garage off the grid, and I'm pretty happy with what I have so far, using a 400w Air-X and a set of four Mitsu 125w 12v PVs (all wired for 24v).

I would like to find a simple "diversion controller", basically a switch that flips if the voltage on my battery array is over a certain amount, so I can power some "optional" equipment with the extra power, such as a ceiling fan.

Can anyone point me to such a thing?  I would imagine this device would have a hysteresis, like a thermostat, so it would turn "on" at, say 28v, and turn off at 26.5v, or something like that.  The on/off action could be very simple, and just power a relay, that would act as a switch to turn on some things that I only need to run when there's extra power to burn.

The reason behind this is that I'm often at the office during the day (while the hot summer sun would be beating down on my solar panels).  If the ceiling fan or a ventelator could turn on, it would keep my garage cool so when I get there in the eve, it's not so unbearably hot.

Any ideas?

Re: Simple diversion controller

Travis, check out the charge controllers here. Something like the C-40. It has a built in diversion load control.

Thanks!  That one isn't too pricy, and looks like it will make a good addition once I have too much solar for my current charge controller.  I could keep one "set" of modules on the old controller, and put the other "set" on this one, using the diversion feature to power the optional items.

Re: Simple diversion controller

sorry to be a parade rainer,

but, the c40, or tristar can be a pv charge control, a diversion load control, or a load controller, but only one at a time.

so 1 c40 does not solve your problem.

for what it is worth, run the fan if you have the energy or put it on a dc timer.  i would not go down the diversion path if it was my system.

Re: Simple diversion controller

Would something like the

MPPT60

http://store.altenergystore.com/Charge-Controllers/Solar-Charge-Controllers/MPPT-Solar-Charge-Controllers/Xantrex-MPPT-Charge-Controllers/Xantrex-XW-Solar-Charge-Controller-MPPT-865-1030/p5946/

work?

It includes a configurable auxiliary port, that allows you to trigger and clear on max or min voltages ...
This could be used to trip relays or similar ... resulting in an effective diversion load controller.

I have one of these, but have not used the auxiliary port yet ... but I am hoping to do so at a future point.

Anyways, Would this work for what Travis wants to do?
( by the way ... I love this controller, and am very thankful the Alt-E staff recommended it )
