Wind, Solar Hybrid merging power problem

I'm building a small wind and solar hybrid system. My problem is safely merging the two power sources through some kind of junction box before it goes to the charge controller, anybody have any ideas how to do this?

Thanks Smiley

Re: Wind, Solar Hybrid merging power problem

you dont merge them.  the solar should have its own controller, and the wind should have its own controller.

tell us what you have and what you are trying to do and we can give more advice from there.

Re: Wind, Solar Hybrid merging power problem

Hi James,
My current solar setup is a group of 4 small panels producing 18watts (super small!!) with a simple 15amp charge controller from http://greenenergiesllc.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=1  no reverse charge to the panel protection ie. Blocking diode (I don't think the controller has this function).

I just purchased the Xantrex C40 controller from this site and the wind turbine in production will output around a max 100watts. I have 2 oldish sealed lead acid UPS batteries, 75 amph each I think.

Sorry, I'm very new at this Sad please let me know if you need any more info! It's a very simple setup, no fuses or anything yet, still learning.

Thanks Smiley

Re: Wind, Solar Hybrid merging power problem

okay, so the pv (solar) has its own controller.  leave that alone, pv - controller - battery bank.  if you want to upgrade , any controller of 10 to 15a should work for the solar, but if you are to invest, i would suggest one with a display for better learning.  as far as i know, all of the charge controllers we sell have reverse current protection.

if the wind turbine is home built or a unit that did not come with a controller, then you use the c40 as a diversion load controller (read the manual) with a diversion load.  so it will be: wind turbine - battery - c40 - dump load.

I would strongly recommend appropriate safety equipment as well as safe wiring practices.  as you system grows, you will likely need a dc power center and appropriate disconnects (circuit breakers) to deal with the components in your system.  here are the dump loads we carry below.

Re: Wind, Solar Hybrid merging power problem

so if I'm to understand this right the c40 will go on the wiring *after* the battery, what would save the battery from being overcharged by the wind turbine?

Re: Wind, Solar Hybrid merging power problem

well, yes.

in most basic terms, a diversion load controller has a voltage set point, to divert, and one to reconnect.

if the controller were to talk to itself it would sound like this.

" when battery voltage hits X, divert current to diversion load until battery voltage drops to Y."

the reason it goes "after" the battery is so that the wind turbine is never without a load.  if it were without a load (say if a controller disconnected it) it would spin wildly until it wrecked itself.

other wind fans will have more sophisticated explanations, but that is the general principal in a nutshell.
