Am I Doing the Numbers Wrong?!

Hi,
My wife and I are very interested in solar.  We live in Northeast Florida and we currently use about 800 kwh per month.
If we used Uni-Solar's SHR-17 Solar Shingles, we would need 359 of them which would take up 2,584.8 sq ft!!!  Our entire home is only 1,000 sq ft.
Are we doing the numbers wrong???
Thanks for your help!

Re: Am I Doing the Numbers Wrong?!

why do you need that many?  are you aiming for 100%?  If you are, why did/would you pick shingles?

What is your goal for your proposed photovoltaic adventure?

a. to save money
b. to have photovoltaics because you want to

if the answer is "a" money is better spent on conservation and efficiency, unless you want a payback over a 12 yr + period.  if "b", then, with most folks it comes down to system goals,  budget, or space that drives system design.  Very rarely do folks aim for or achieve 100% of loads covered on a grid tie system.

what have you done for efficiency and conservation thus far?

no matter what pv you pick, you are looking at about a 7kw system assuming you want to meat 100% of you loads.  That is likely over $50k, and probably more space than you have.

i'd love to hear your thoughts, and yes, your math was pretty close on the array size.  I came up with 411.

Re: Am I Doing the Numbers Wrong?!

Your numbers for square footage are off by about 50% but the issues that James raised are far more important.

Shingles are not laid end-to-end like floor tiles, instead each shingle overlaps the one below and the one to the left or right. Once all of the shingles are installed each shingle will only have 3 sq ft of exposed area reducing your roof space requirements to 1077 sq ft. Also, the area of your roof is much larger than your house since it is angled and usually overhangs all sides of the house.

Even if the useful area is limited to half, or the south facing portion, I suspect that like most of us you will find that you still have more roof space than you can afford to cover with solar rather than the other way around.
