End User Module Performance Concerns

I'm a recent Master's graduate in Materials Science from NC State University. My research focused on nanoscale solar cell defect characterization. I'm currently looking for a R&D position at one of the major solar cell manufacturers (e.g. BP Solar, Shell, GE, Kyocera, Sharp, Evergreen, etc.), and am trying to determine end user-specific cell and module performance concerns that I would address in my position.

In other words, what common types of problems occur with the installation and maintenance of modules (e.g. delamination) and of the cells themselves (e.g. light induced degradation)? I have also heard frustration in some circles voiced about the lack of a power tolerance standard for modules (ie whether, say, a 100 W module actually generates 100 W to some fixed percentage) in spite of UL-1703 and IEC-61215 certifications.

thanks.

just for opinion's sake,

it seems that europe has a tighter window for rated output figures that are nearer to 5% rather than the accepted 10% here in the US.

As far as discoloration, just about everything discolors after 20 years in the sun, but amorphous modules (like unisolar) seem to have the most color changing over the lifetime.

James,

So, with respect to the cell/module performance question, what specific kind of performance complaints have you heard from your customers with respect to different manufacturers' modules? I want to get a feel for the consumer's concerns, before I try to wade in and ask the individual manufacturers themselves, who are loathe to divulge their latest R&D research. thanks.

Re: End User Module Performance Concerns

If you where to ask me, I would say "to much money is being spent on R&D." How many times must the wheel be re-invented anyway?
How many billions of dollars have been poured into PV R&D over the past 10 years?
What do have that wasn't there than 10 years ago? (I still see the same thing unless of course we include todays HIGHER PRICES!)
When will the PV module every reach its apogee?
Will there every be a day when there is no longer a need to pour billions of dollars into PV R&D?
When will those billions be poured into putting PV on "roof tops?"
After all, PV is not going to produce usable electricity sitting on a countertop in some laboratory, its only going to produce usable electricity sitting outside in the SUN!
With all these questions there is one I have yet to ask that really stabs at the heart of the matter. Why was the off switch and stop button every invented if no one cares to use them? Speaking philosophically, mankind has turned electricity on, but now it cant be turned off.

I agree Thomas,

at some point you just have to purchase the best available panels and equipment, and put a system together.
