Micro-hydro power from large midwest river.

I would like to power my 900 sg. ft home from the large river behind the house. I could use the energy savings to send teens to college. And share with my elderly neighbors the technology. I will be ordering from this site , how-to information, and any know-how from you folks will go a long way in helping many people to gain earth saving ideas.

                              Thank you,

                         Matt Johnson

Re: Micro-hydro power from large midwest river.

Matt - If you have a good site for a micro-hydro application, then you are definitely in luck!  At appropriate sites, these systems have efficiencies of 65% or better.  (As opposed to solar electric modules which have efficiencies closer to 13-15% in converting sunlight to electricity.)

Site assessment and location of turbine will be very important.  Be sure to read up about that.  You might find it helpful to start with our "How-To" section.  (Here's a link.)

An overview:

We have also found this book pretty helpful:

Keep in mind local regulations regarding the river as well.  Again, research and site analysis will really pay off.  Good luck!

Re: Micro-hydro power from large midwest river.

Thank you Kristen for the reply. I am going to purchase Mr. Davis's book. It looks like facinating info.
My goal is to cut my coal fired elec. service by 50%.That will save me $5000 over 4 years at current utility rates.
I also live where there is considerable wind and could utilize some wind power too.
From what prices I've seen reguarding wind turbines, the outlay of cash could be prohibitive. More research is needed.
