We have been using our Excel NE for six years at our cottage in the Parry Sound district of Ontario. It took us two or three years to iron out a few problems, i.e.: moisture, flies, odour, but have been so successful that two other once-sceptical cottagers on our small lake have acquired their own. The
optional
fan for the NE is a necessity in our opinion as it the biggest factor in controlling the problems mentioned above.
At the end of this season, 2010, we have noticed a problem with moisture in the bottom of the unit. This would be caused by a blocked drain and, although access to the drain is awkward, we are confident that we can fix it ourselves. When the unit is working properly there is no odour and no flies; the compost out of the drawer is dry and odourless, and maintenance is mininal.
These units are not for the squeamish but compared to the reality of outhouses leaching into the lake that is small price to pay.
