If you’re going solar with a grid-tied solar power kit, it's worth considering battery backup as well. Grid-tied systems are often the easiest and most cost-efficient type of solar power system to install. However, their main drawback is that when the grid goes down, UL requirements mean grid-tie systems shut down immediately as well. This way your system isn't sending electricity to the grid, potentially endangering lineworkers during an outage.
A hybrid system can take your home off the power grid during an outage. In “island mode,” your home can remain online as an isolated microgrid until utility power is restored.
