New at the U

Vol 1. Issue 4. June 2009

Note from the U

Can you believe that Summer is already upon us? Of course, we see all those solar rays and it just keeps us working hard at bringing you the best renewable energy classes possible! On top of adding classes and gaining IREC accreditation, AltE U has also been working with local community colleges and vocational schools to help develop hands-on labs for incorporating renewable energy technologies in curriculum. (Don't you wish we had that when we were in school?) Working with schools and students is giving us some great ideas for labs and classes, so stay tuned! All of these projects are keeping us busy and we are pleased to have some serious help from newest U member, Education Programs Manager Kevin Hunt. Kevin brings to AltE University a breadth of experience in environmental education and action, having managed an environmental-education AmeriCorps program, taught 4th-6th grade environmental science and converted his old diesel Mercedes to run on waste vegetable oil. Kevin coordinates environmental volunteer opportunities for several local organizations and serves as the secretary of the Lake Boon Association. His energy and experience is already showing – see below for our first service project opportunity at Fenway Park!
Stop by and say hi to Kevin and his dog, Buster, next time you are in Hudson.
See you at the U! Kristen, AltE U Director

AltE U awarded ISP Accreditation for Solar Thermal
and PV Trainings!

Dan Macieski

We love to praise our AltE alumni and highlight all of the great projects they complete. But in this newsletter, we thought we would take a minute to hog some of the spot light. We are very proud to announce that AltE University has been awarded accreditation from the Institute for Sustainable Power. (ISP) Following a comprehensive application and evaluation process, we are pleased join the ranks of accredited organizations like Solar Energy International, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and the Solar Living Institute. We are now one of only thirteen organizations in the United States to hold this international accreditation.

What does this mean for future U students?
Future NABCEP certified installers: As of May 15, 2009, our 300-level installation class hours count toward the NABCEP educational requirement. In order to apply for the NABCEP PV or Solar Thermal installation certification exam, you will most likely need to complete 40 hours of classroom training plus a number of installations. See the Educational Requirements section of the NABCEP website for more information.

NABCEP PV Certificate of Knowledge
If you are considering entering the field of renewable energy in sales or another non-installation career path, you may want to take the NABCEP Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge Exam. We offer the Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge exam after successful completion of both PV 301 AND PV 302 (5 days total).

In the words of NABCEP: “After taking a course from an approved provider and passing a national exam, this Certificate shows that the recipient has achieved basic knowledge, comprehension and application of key terms and concepts of photovoltaic (solar electric) systems operations. The Certificate by itself does not qualify an individual to install PV systems but it does prepare them for employment in the field.”

Red Sox Green Team Service Project at Fenway Park: August 26th

This year, AltE University is pleased to offer a service project for our students, alumni and friends. On Wednesday, August 26th, the Boston Red Sox host the Chicago White Sox at 7:10 p.m. Please join us in volunteering on the “Green Team.” The Red Sox started the Green Team last year in an effort to reduce the amount of recyclables being discarded in the trash at Fenway Park. For each home game, between 30-80 Green Team volunteers patrol the park, collecting plastic bottles, cups and trays.

If you’d like to volunteer, you will need to be at the ball park before 6:00 p.m. on the 26th for orientation. Recyclable collection ends after the 7th inning, at which time we’ll be free to watch the game from one of the standing-room areas in the park.

This project is open to the first 80 participants only, so SIGN UP TODAY! Final details on meeting time and place, what to wear, etc., will be sent out to participants prior to the game. Please direct any questions to Kevin Hunt via email.

See you at the ball park!
