Battery Balancers

NEW from KiloVault! Battery balancers are used to maintain battery voltages across a series connection of several batteries (in a row) in a battery bank. When batteries are connected in series, voltage may vary due to differences in cell chemical composition, temperature, or self discharge rates. These voltage differences increase with each charge/discharge process, resulting in premature battery failure.  These balancers help extend the life of the battery bank, and are suitable for use in a variety of battery technologies including lead acid and lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP).

  • If you notice that your battery voltages are quickly getting out of balance, please check all your battery cable terminations are tight and ensure that the interconnects between the batteries are equal in length and gauge.

  • Batteries connected in series can become out of balance for various reasons, including but not limited to age, temperature and battery internal resistance. Balancers are not required if your batteries stay within .2v of each other during normal operation. The difference can increase with every charge or discharge cycle. Because the equipment they are connected to only sense the sum of the voltages of the string (nominally 24v or 48v), when out of balance one or more battery(s) in the bank can exceed the high or low voltage limits before the others resulting in premature failure.

  • Because of the relatively flat charge/discharge curve of LiFeP04 chemistries this difference is usually most noticeable once the batteries reach the steep part of the curve–when they are near the low voltage or high voltage operating range.

  • CAUTION: When the balancers are active, they can become hot and should not be placed directly on the batteries. Be sure that the balancer(s) is thermally insulated and located away from flammable materials. We recommend using ceramic tile or other similar material when the battery balancers are in use.
