There are several types of Lithium batteries. Here at altE, we carry what we feel is the best candidate for renewable energy storage. The main advantages of Lithium Phosphate (LFP or LiFePO4) batteries, as compared to Lead Acid for example, are that no maintenance is necessary, they can operate at very low temperatures without affecting capacity, and they are much safer. They also offer one of the lowest lifetime costs per kWh cycle.

Lithium batteries are a great choice for solar power systems. They are especially forgiving when it comes to the level of discharge they will tolerate. Said another way, you can safely go up to a 100% depth of discharge (DoD) while maintaining nearly 98% efficiency. Many of the lithium deep cycle batteries we offer have a cycle life north of 10,000 cycles (at 80% DoD)!
Lithium batteries work well in solar systems with battery backup because they can be charged up and do not require maintenance.
Many lithium solar batteries come equipped with a built in battery management system (also known as a BMS). Battery management systems are designed to protect batteries by ensuring they are operating within the manufacturers' desired parameters. Parameters monitored by the BMS could include state of charge (SoC), voltage, or temperature of the battery. It’s no secret there is a higher initial capital outlay when buying lithium deep cycle batteries. The BMS is a great built-in feature because it automatically helps protect your investment in the battery by shutting it down if the BMS detects something wrong.

Check out our video on the KiloVault line of lithium solar batteries. The KiloVault line is specifically designed for the residential energy storage market—both for off-grid and for battery backup systems. They can be wired in 12V, 24V and 48V configurations. They are maintenance-free and have a 5,000 cycle life when discharged to 80% depth of discharge. Click to watch and learn more about the KiloVault!
In addition to being easy to work with, lithium deep cycle batteries are also lighter than other deep cycle battery options. Depending on the amp hours and the voltage of the specific battery they can weigh between 16.2 lbs (7.35 kg) to 32.65 lbs (14.8 kg). This makes them a solid option for mobile applications like marine or tiny solar houses.
Join us as we visit the Reno, NV manufacturing plant of Battle Born lithium batteries! We talk with the COO, Sean Nichols, and Director of Engineering, Evan Humphreys. We see how they assemble the battery cells, and discuss some of their future products.
SimpliPhi manufactures lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) that are virtually maintenance free. Their lithium batteries come in a variety of amp hours depending on your storage needs and are available in 12 Volts, 24 Volts and 48 Volts. Watch our video to learn more about lithium deep cycle batteries.
