The ball valve is by far the more efficient of the two isolation valves since it provides a complete flow barrier and has fewer tendencies to corrode and get stuck. Three way ball valves may also be used for both isolation and draining the collector loop. An isolation vavle is also required in the cold water service line to shut off flow to the storage tank if needed.
