Oklahoma's electricity prices average $0.11/kWh, below the national average of $0.14/kWh.
The average cost of a 5.5kW (equivalent to saving about 100 trees a year) solar power system starts around $11,000 in Oklahoma. That system would pay for itself through energy savings within 6-7 years. System life can span well over 25 years, and savings will improve with inflation.
Across Oklahoma there's between 1,900 and 2,300 kWh of available solar power for each square yard of rooftop. But somehow less than 0.3% of the state's renewable electricity generation came from solar power. Oklahoma does not have much in the way of solar incentives. No tax exemptions, but the state does have net metering...but credit hours for power generated do not roll over each month and the Utility does not need to pay homeowners anything. Its unambitious RPS of 15% has already been exceeded via industrial wind power. On top of that, with the passing of the "Solar Surcharge" bill Oklahoma utilities can now charge homeowners a fee for building any grid-tied alternative energy system.
It's not all doom and gloom though. An average-sized system in Oklahoma would still pay for itself through energy savings within 6-7 years. System life can span well over 25 years, and savings will improve with inflation.
