I've also been trying to locate information on the manufacturing of solar cells to no avail. All I can find is kids' projects and I'm begining to think there's a group hoarding this info.

You need to have Ground cables or earth cables as it is known in Europe.
On the second question, try scare-crow. it worked for us.
