#71 -  Renewable Energy > Technical Discussion: Solar Electric System - Photovoltaic > Next to zero gains at high noon
Hello- I bought the setup for our off grid cabin and it worked great from the day we installed (last November) until about a month and a half ago.

What we noticed was the battery bank started to slowly not reach 100 percent each day, when we were used to seeing it back to 100% by about 11:00am each day. Even on cloudy days we would see that the panels were gaining about 8-10 amps. It was not uncommmon in bright sun to see it producing 20+ amps.

Now, according to the TM 2025 battery monitor, we only gain about 0.5 - 0.9 amps at high noon! When an appliance turns on, however, we do not see the number drop into the negatives- the reading simply goes down for a moment and then back to +0.9 amps when we know from the past that the fridge draws 3.5 amps when it turns on.

Are there any quick reasons as to why this would be happening? Is it my charge controller? I find it hard to believe that on a bright sunny day the panels are only producing 1 amp.

Any tips on where to begin are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

#75 -  Renewable Energy > RE General Discussion > Backup solutions for small appliances for 2 to 3 weeks where electricity is NOT
I travel extensively to some very remote places in Haiti where there is NO electricity sometimes for weeks. I normally travel with my MacbookPro, 3 or 4 smartphone, and perhaps a small portable radio. I am looking for a portable backup solution to keep my stuffs up and running for at least 3 to 4 weeks at a time. I eventually would like to use that same backup system to take care of the small room that I reside when I am in that country (few lights, a small 4ft fridge, small toaster, things of that nature. I would like your input as to which products might do the trick for me. Thank you in advance for your support and guidance. Robert

#76 -  Renewable Energy > Technical Discussion: Solar Water Pumping > Determining panel size to run shurflow pump
MY PLANNED APPLICATION:  I want to power a SHURFLOW 12V, 3 GPM, DIAPHRAGM WATER PUMP  [#2088-343-435] directly from a PV panel (don't want to have battery involved).  The pump will fill a 20 gal holding tank; tank only needs refill about once/week.    I would only run the pump during afternoon sun.

QUESTIONS:  What's the smallest size panel I can get away with for this use?  Would I need a charge controller?  The pump's max voltage allowed is 13.6.  The pump is 7 amps.

Thanks for your reply.

#77 -  Renewable Energy > Technical Discussion: Solar Electric System - Photovoltaic > Re: Solar Installation Software
Lee,

The best software is going to depend a lot on your application and location. What were you looking for as far as results? Costs and ROI? Estimated Annual Production? Different states also have different incentives as well which is why location is so important. For now, I suggest PV watts as a good starting point: pvwatts.nrel.gov.
