Do batteries freeze?

Do batteries freeze?

I have several solar powered outdoor accessories- lights and decorative items.  Do I need to take these in during the winter, because they run on batteries that will freeze?

Thanks,
Judi

Re: Do batteries freeze?

the short answer is yes.

It may be a good idea to take this things in for the winter if they are only for decoration.  If they are for useful lighting there may be steps that can be taken to keep things working.

the long answer is that it depends what kind of batteries, what kind of enclosures, how bad the temperatures get, if the enclosures are insulated, etc.

reply with more info, and I am sure that myself and the forum crew will have more to say on this one.

Re: Do batteries freeze?

Hi James-

I have a faux rock with our house number on it that is solar, and I believe it uses regular alkaline batteries.  It's too far away from the house- and too dark- for me to check on right now.

The other items are solar lights, again powered by regular alkaline batteries.

We've had 32' temps the past couple of nights, and they're still lit.  But we live in upstate NY, so it will get much colder for longer periods.

Nothing in the packaging tells what to do in freezing weather, so your help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
J. Kozlowski

Re: Do batteries freeze?

Hi!
I have a weather station that has 2 alkaline batterys in the radio transmeter that is outside. The batteries are alkiline dura cells and they didn,t freeze. It got to about 6 below here in west PA. winter before last and they didn,t freeze. My daughter in northen VA. has left her rechargable battery stuff outside all winter and everything still works. I was there once when it was about 8 degrees. So I think they shouldn,t freeze.

Re: Do batteries freeze?

I am so used to living in my renewable energy bubble, that I assumed you were asking about flooded lead acid, agm, or gel batteries.

I have no idea what alkaline batteries will do in freezing weather.

A. do nothing and find out

or

B. call battery manufacturer and ask

either way, I would like to know out of curiousity.
