Use swimming pool water to generate electricity

Is there any way I can use the flow of water from my swimming pool pump to generate electicity?  Possibly I could install a small hydroelectric turbine of sorts in line?

Yes, it is possible. But, it does not make sense. If you have to run your pump for 2 hours a day now, the backpressure/reduced flow caused by adding the turbine will make you run the pump longer (say 3-4 hours), to accomplish the filtering of the water. Since the swimming pool pump will consume more power than you can possibly generate, your net cost for electricity will go up, not down

brogers, the best way to get electricity from your pool pump is to reduce the time and power at which your pump is running. Installing a proper dimmer switch rated for the eqivalent Watts, 1 HP = 750 Watts, will allow you to slow the pump down thus using less power and a timer will reduce the amount of time the pump operates during the day or week, thus saving electricity. Using a DC motor or pump and using PV might get rid the electric cost all together.
