PLEASE HELP ME , I am in need of education ASAP ! ! !

I am buying a small acreage in missouri and want to use wind turbines to supply all my electrical needs. I know nothing about this except the wind blows and it creates electricity with the turbines somehow! How and where do I get started? Please anybody that can HONESTLY help, please do so. I greatly will truly appreciate your help and be grateful.

Same here! I really need good advice. I'm planning to build a house here in the Philippines made out of solar panels or wind turbines, whichever is cost-efficient in a tropical and windy country like ours. BUT, I really have no idea how many solar panels or wind turbines I need to purchase to make a 110V/220V aircon working or which of the two alternative energy will maximize my savings in the long-run. Anyone who helps me here will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Kimberly,

I don't know exactly where in Missouri you are, but you might want to attend an energy fair in New Bloomfield or Marshfield.  Check this link for fair dates and information:  http://www.hereshelpnet.org/

I got my first turbine from a friend in Missouri because it was not making enough power to make it worthwhile. It was near Columbia, and though I do not now recall its height, it was almost certainly not optimal (guessing 40 feet, but it was a long time ago...). Also, it was an old wincharger, not that efficient. It is, I believe, a truism that the wind rarely blows as hard as you think, nor as steadily.

All that said, wind is a good mix with solar. We live in cloudy northern Michigan, and use wind to get though our winters and solar to make it in summer. Similar trends in weather will pertain in Missouri, though your winters are generally much more sunny than here (at least where I lived, southern and central MO). Well, almost everywhere is more sunny than here. I like the mix because it is often windy when not sunny, and vice versa.

I recently found a book that helps explain a lot of the options and implications in solar, wind and other forms of energy/efficiency. The Renewable Energy Handbook, William H. Kemp is a good start on your quest.

Good luck! And go for it...the info and equipment you need are out there, and much more accessible than when we started this project 20 years ago!

Kimberly,
Whereabouts in Missouri are you?  Some areas are better than others.  As a precursor to taking my home off the grid, I have just finished taking my garage off-grid, using 4 125w solar panels and an Air-X 400w wind generator.  From my experience so far, wind alone would not be a workable solution.  I'm about 45 miles (line-of-site) northwest of St. Louis.  During a trip last year, I crossed over from IL back to MO just a little south of Hannibal, and I saw a few homes with what look like Southwest's grid-tied generator (the curvy blade one).

Is it your intention to be grid-tied or battery-powered?
Would you consider supplimenting your wind with solar?

Dear Kimberly,
Check out the Wind Power section at http://www.alternative-heating-info.com.

Also, on the Solar Heating main page (same website) is a link to a PV solar sizing and cost calculator.

Good luck,

Sam

Kimberly,
The location of the property you have chosen is critical in the decision to utilise wind as your energy source.  Where in Mo. are you located?  If you go to alternativeenergy.com you can find my page (look up Jim C) and sign me up on your friends list after you join the site.  We can private message on that site so that we can discuss what it is you are trying to achieve.  I live about 25 miles from St. Louis and have worked in the alt.energy, heating and cooling and electrical contracting field for about 10 years and I can help you with the questions you have about design and application of wind and solar.  DO NOT BUILD A HOUSE UNTILL YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!  Build the wrong house and you are throwing all of the money you spend on alt.energy, down the drain!  There is a lot to this if you want to do it right and you only get one chance to do it.  I look forward to hearing from you.
