Inverter sparking

For more than a year my house ran on solar power without any problem. I recently connected to the public electric grid. The system is set up with a manual transfer switch to go from the utility company to solar. When I turn on the inverter it flashes a hot spark even without any load. Can some one tell me what might be the problem. The Xantrex Charge Controller is reading 14.5 volts.                 Beverly

Re: Inverter sparking

I suspect that your manual transfer switch is a "Make-Before-Break" type which is causing the output of your inverter and the grid to be connected together momentarily, and the sparking occurs because they are not in phase.

You will need a "Break-Before-Make" type switch, which means that computers, TV's, and other sensitive electrical equipment might switch OFF during the brief period that it takes for you to throw the switch.

Thank you. The electrician will come to check it out.
