#1 -  Renewable Energy > RE General Discussion > Dead Xantrex Inverter.
Hey Dave:

U R inded very observant!
I use the MX AUX output to control a 150A Hellroaring DC-SSR
for low voltage disconnect.
The XantrexDR1512E was chosen since I have a backup generator. However I never used it to charge with.
Have also a good look on the Heavy Duty S-1500 Samlex (230V).
However it only have a surge ability of 2000 watt, while
the SK-1500 have a 3000 watt surge capability. This is important if one want to start up a refrigerator or in my
case a dehumidifier, which have 3-5x normal use watts start up surge. Its moonsoon here. Constant rain and on this mountain cloud. Humidity close to 90%... Hmmm
Needs that new sins wave inverter soon! ;-)

#2 -  Renewable Energy > RE General Discussion > Re: Triple Hybrid 1.5 Kw Solar, Micro-Hydro, Wind-turbine system.
Thanx a lot dave. Unfortunately have the inverter: A
Xantrex DR1512E 1500 watt just begun to give out wrong
frequency (200-400 Hz), which cannot drive some of my
applications. Xantrex support so far silent on the
warranty issue... Should have bought a true sinus Wave
inverter in the first place. Do you have any recommendation
on good durable true sinus wave inverter 1500-2000W?
FX80 with SSR! Great idea. Can the SSR also take 80A?

#4 -  Renewable Energy > Technical Discussion: Other > Re: Line loss/resistance over distance
Dear friend Ken:

One can go higher than 48 volt with
serial coupling of 3-5 panels...
They will have Open Circuit voltages of 80-90V
Shorted functioning circuit voltage somewhat lower.
(Usually number of panels x ~16V)
Therefore is the Kaneka thin-film (Voc=90V!)
so attractive. At these higher voltages the
current and line loss drops drastically!

Outback MX60 charge controller takes Voc max 150V
Solar Converters PT 90-30 charge controller takes Voc max 180V
Please redo the calculation at these higher voltages & lower currents and you will see for yourself!
Still battery voltage can be kept at 12 or 24V
Then maximum power tracking (MPPT) boost will be good!
That is: On cold days one will gain ~30% increase in charge
current.
Only in the power cable Panel-2-controller will be
high voltage. Controller-2-battery will still be nominal ~12V or 24V or 48V!

Solar converters MPPT PT 90-30 and PT 48-40 etc.
can also charge any battery (12-24-48V) from
a higher voltage source (panels put in series).
Then the cable can be modest (AWG 6-8) still
with minimal losses. MX60 though definitely the
best controller if max voltage do not exceed 150V.

#6 -  Renewable Energy > Technical Discussion: Other > Re: Hybrid wind & PV battery connection?
Thanx for info Craig Flanders.

Figured that out myself later...
Have read most of your informative reviews.
Have a system list not yet ordered.
Is it possible that you could look through
it and comment if something can be improved?
Then please notify me per email.

#7 -  Renewable Energy > Technical Discussion: Other > Hybrid wind & PV battery connection?
I plan to connect 3 PVs through a MPPT controller to
the battery bank. And also connect an Air Industrial
via its C40 trace controller to the battery bank.
Is there anything wrong in that?

However I read in this article:
http://howto.altenergystore.com/The-Basics/Small-Wind-Turbines-Primer/a28/
that wind-turbines and PV should be connected to a:
DC source center... What is a DC source center?

Many Thanx in advance for any clarification.

#8 -  Renewable Energy > RE General Discussion > Best hybrid Solar/Wind off-grid system ???
Dear Friends:

Im newbie in this field.
I should use a laptop 10 hours/day + 2 x 5w lights 4 hours a day.
My cabin is on a mountain top in Sri Lanka with plenty of
both wind and sun. Sometimes forceful tropical rain-storms!

Q1: What hybrid Solar/Wind system is then best here?
    (price ~ 3000-6000 US$)

Q2: Can one still draw 12 volts from a 48 Volts system?

Q3: Which batteries are best for off-grid Solar/Wind system?

Many thanx in advance.
