Re: home made wind power genarator

If you really want to spend more money building it yourself, Visit http://www.picoturbine.com/ and look for Homemade Wind Turbine, Hugh Piggott's Brakedrum Windmill Plans It gives general design principles and discusses alternator mods, choosing a surplus DC generator, wiring, towers, loads, and even design of a purpose-built alternator.

My Advise, BUY A NEW ONE FROM HERE....

Re: home made wind power genarator

All very well to say "buy a new one", but in some countries the governmental controls make it difficult to import plus the import charges levied by governments, and also 'things disappear' in transit.

It is often easier to use equipment at hand IF one can get information on how to put it together.

"Once bitten twice shy"

Re: home made wind power genarator

go for it , just make sure you use a voltage regulator, just salvage one from the vehicle you got the alternator and make sure you ground the alternator itself. put a switch in line to prevent any accidental discharge when the windmill is not in use.

Re: home made wind power genarator

Hi Tom,

You sound like a guy who has done this, and I have considered it for a long time, as my cheap intro to the subject.  With the price of the one I saw online at $600, it hardly seems necessary to build my own (which would undoubtedly be much less efficient and would not have the noise, safety, battery protection, and other technology of the purchased system).  But what the heck, any more discussion about what you have done and how much benefit/hassle it was?  And what to use for rotor/blades?

Thanks

Ron

Re: home made wind power genarator

no doubt a commercially made windmill would be better if you can afford and obtain one, along with any necessary controllers and/or regulators would be your best bet......If you do purchase a commercial model it may be interesting to build a crazy one anyway just to compare. If you need blades just look to your right when you are removing the alternator and voltage regulator from whatever vehicle you are salvaging, you may see a  usable fan right there in front of the radiator.

Re: home made wind power genarator

If you decide to continue with your homemade windmill, I suggest you investigate into using an old symetrical constant-speed aircraft propeller & hub.  The propeller is designed to grab the wind(or in this case allow the wind to grab it), and the adjustable-pitch hub will allow you to control the rpm.  You should be able to find both of these fairly cheap at your nearest aviation maintenance hangar, a scrapyard, or possibly on e-bay.

Windmills

I am a guy in the North of Sweden who plans to build a windmill with a Volvo generator with regulator built in. Anyone who have drawings or anything I can look at to know how to.

home made wind power

I am in Iraq, and I noticed a lot of wind.  In my spare time I managed to put together a pretty functional mill.  I used a large water pump as the swivel on top of the tower, and used another waterpump form a large truck engine to mount a huge fan.  The water pump has a pulley, so I mounted an alternator on top, and hooked up the pulleys with at v-belt.  Works like a charm.  Looks kind of funny, but email and I will be glad to send pics, or details!
