Inexpensive battery bank charging ....

My system... 300 watts of solar panels, Solar boost 2512x controller, 14 deep-cycle 220 amp/hr batteries wired in series for 12 volts.  AND...
Xantrex 40 amp digital auto charger that just died..

Question.. I paid 150.00 for that charger.. and it lasted about a year and a half.. Should I be looking for a MANUAL 40 amp or higher charger? I've been told that to charge large banks of batteries on cloudy days you want to almost boil the batts at 15 volts or higher, and no automatic-charger will stay at amperage once they reach 14.4 volts or so.. Any product recommendations gentlemen/ladies?? Thanks !!
