I live off the grid on San Juan Island and in the winter depend a lot on the Bergey wind turbine for power here in the Pacific Northwest. The XL 1000 has plagued me with problems from the time it was installed. First the control board didnt work at all and the turbine would free wheel. Then the rotor burned out. Now Im on my third rectifier. These are not easy, quick problems to fix with the turbine on a high tower. Now last week the control board caught fire and burned out the board. No blown fuses, an $880.00 board protecting a 2 dollar fuse, I dont get it. After spending a whole week trying to talk with Bergey about the problem I got nowhere. People there were rude, would not return calls or emails. I sent pictures of the burnt board to get some kind of answer to what happened which could have ended much worse that it did with no results. Their only answer was to buy a new control board from them, its the worst service I have ever had with a company. Clearly it was some defect in the board that caused it to burn up and not blow a fuse. This melt down could have caused a major fire. They would not even sell me just the board itself but I had to buy the whole case which I already have. I know they now outsource to China but they should stand behind their products. I will replace the Bergey with another wind turbine. One that is more robust, and reliable with a company that stands behind its products and claims because Bergey sure doesnt. Problem never solved.
