Whisper 200 48V system by Paul Davis
Date Added: March 28, 2007
I completed the installation of a Whisper 200 system this past July (2006). My electric usage has decreased by an average of 40 to 51% (u=45). I'm very happy with my Whisper 200, but I’m not satisfied as the Connecticut Light & Power has had a few rate increases. My electric bill dollar value has not really changed. Therefore I think I will pursue a Whisper 500 to run either parallel with the existing or use instead of my whisper 200. I can use the 200 in another setting in a future time frame.
There are currently 29 alternative energy users in my township area of South Eastern CT. However I'm the only wind generator installed, the majority is solar powered. I do not agree with solar when compared to wind in this area of the world. Average peak sunlight is 3-4 hours in fall through winter and early spring, whereas in the summer 8-10 hours is prevailant. I have three or four small solar panels for security lights, and during the fall to spring time frame, the sun does not produce enough energy for bright lights. If you speak to any of the solar users they will tell you that the wind does not flow well up here.
I did my research using the Weather Balloons and real time data collection. I would say that 75 to 80% of all weather patterns originating from the western US end up affecting my area in a low pressure system crossing over or within 350 nautical miles of me. Thereby creating wind energy for my windmill. Like I originally said, I am very happy with my whisper. Additionally I would like to add that Alternative Energy Store was a great help during my installation. Also the technical support at Southwest Wind Power was well received and is greatly appreciated.
One last item is I am connected to the grid just not the way our country or power company sees it. I bring grid power into my system and use what my Whisper 200 cannot produce on current loads. I run a continuous float on my battery bank and do an equalizing battery charge monthly, unless weather and/or usage dictate otherwise.
I thoroughly enjoyed this project; it was something I completed with my children. This has allowed us to bond more and for them and me to learn more about the wind, each other and life in general.
