Combined Solar Space and Water Heating

Water & Space Heating combination systems provide the greatest efficiency, maximizing the most from the sun. With the combined approach, any heat not used for hot water consumption is automatically diverted for space heating.

How It Works

When there is sufficient heat to be drawn from the collectors, the controller automatically activates the pumps. Heated solar fluid is then circulated from the collectors, through the heat exchanger where its heat is transferred to water in the storage tank. The solar liquid is then pumped back to the collectors to once again be reheated. This circulation loop will continue as long as there is heat to be drawn from the collectors. The solar heated water in the storage tank is available for distribution to the house heating system directly. When there is a draw for domestic hot water, the solar hot water module will heat fresh cold water by transferring the heat from the solar storage tank to the fresh cold water. During times when there is little or no sun, a backup heating system will be activated to provide adequate hot water for space heating and domestic use.

System Sizing

Size the total area of GOBI collectors to be 8-12% of the floor area to be heated (depending on the insulation of the space). Choose the package that most closely matches the square footage of your project. Keep in mind that if you live in a cold climate you should consider "rounding up" and choose the bigger package to ensure plenty of warmth on those sunny, frigid winter days!

Example - 2000 sq.ft. home:
2000 x 0.08 (8%) = 160 sq. ft of GOBI
2000 x 0.1 (10%) = 200 sq. ft. of GOBI
2000 x 0.12 (12%) = 240 sq. ft. of GOBI

System Specifications

Systems come with the appropriate flush mount hardware. Rack mount hardware is available at an additional cost.

It includes an upgraded heat-transfer appliance which allows you to see how well the system is performing, as well as to make adjustments and change settings.
