The most common measure of light output is the lumen.
Lumens measure how much light actually falls on a surface. The unit
of measure commonly used to describe LED intensity is the millicandela
or mcd. 1000 mcd = 1 candela. Candelas measure how much light
is produced as measured at the light source. Since lumens and candelas
are measuring two different things they can't be directly compared, but
a rough comparison is possible. Lumens x 80 = the approximate light
output in millicandelas. A 15 watt fluorescent light has an output
of 870 lumens or roughly 70,000 millicandelas or 70 candelas. Individual
white LED's have a light output of 2,000 to 10,000 mcd's. Caution:
Super Bright LEDS can be intense enough to injure the human eye at close
range.
