Solar panel question

I own a motor home in Nebraska normally I remove all 12V batteries (a real pain) and keep them in my basement hooked up to a special charger to help extend the life of these deep cell batteries.  Recently I saw another motor home with a couple solar panels sitting on his dashboard, do you have a solar panel or is a product available where I could leave the batteries in the motor home all year without damaging them and the solar panels will keep the batteries charged through the winter months?

Re: Solar panel question

You will need to purchase PV modules (panels) and a charge controller to keep your batterys maintained. It is really easy and simple.
If your RV sits in the sun mounting them on the roof is a good choice. The size of the PV's and the charge controller would depend on how many and what size batterys you have. As a guess I would say one 20-50 watt module for the house battery bank and one 10 watt for the coach battery would be about right.

Re: Solar panel question

Jeff, I have a boat in Michigan and store my batteries all winter in covered outdoor storage at the marina. I have never had a problem. You must disconnect one of the connections and maybe charge them half way through the season. It's now Christmas and I will check mine, but if it's like any other year they will be topped off in less then 15 minutes. I have a large battery pack and inverter that I put together in 1994 and it works well. Contact me by email if you need more info.
