Thermal 301: Introduction to Solar Domestic Hot Water for Installers

Professionals with plumbing experience who plan to install solar water heating systems can start with this one day introductory course to learn the foundation of this fast growing and important renewable technology. This class will cover the details of major system components for pool heating and domestic water heating technologies. There will be a focus on selecting a proper site. We will introduce the financial and environmental benefits of installing a system. This class is ISP Accredited and counts toward the NABCEP educational requirement. More information about NABCEP certification can be found on the NABCEP website.Solar Space Heating is touched upon in this lecture, but covered in more depth in Thermal 302.

Prerequisite: Each student will be expected to have basic plumbing, electrical, and roofing skills. (Specifically, knowledge of basic plumbing tasks such as soldering pipe joints, gluing pipe joints, sealing fittings, testing for plumbing leaks, etc. In regards to electrical, the installer should be familiar with basic electrical concepts and terms and with the operation of a multimeter. Also included is the ability to connect wiring, create weather sealed connections, etc. Regarding roofing knowledge, the installer should be familiar with basic roof materials, terminologies as well as flashing and sealing methods.) This class does not teach plumbing fundamentals.

Bob is co-owner of Artha Sustainable Living Center LLC, a lead consultant for the state of Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program and a founding member and senior instructor for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. He is the author of Solar Water Heating, A Comprehensive Guide to Solar Water and Space Heating Systems, the first book of it’s kind written in over 20 years. Bob is an ISPQ Independent Master Trainer in Solar Thermal and an NABCEP Certified Solar Thermal Installer. Bob has more than 30 years experience designing and installing solar systems and has been a driving force in the growth of solar thermal use in the mid-west. Bob not only consults and educates on renewable energy, he leads by example living in a home that is powered by the sun and built with sustainable materials.

Take Exit 25A onto Hudson Street. Go about a mile to the 2nd set of stop lights and take a left onto Route 85. Take your first right onto Broad Street. Follow Broad Street for about 3/4 of a mile. On the left hand side after you cross a small bridge you should see a large brick building, known as the Hudson Mills Building at 43 Broad Street. Park in the front and take the main lobby elevator to the 4th floor. Our office is on the far Southeast side of the building. Follow the signs to find your way.
